Week in Review - November 16-20, 2015

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 1:52pm

Congratulations to the Varsity Football Team!

In our first home playoff game in school history, the football team earned an impressive victory over JM Bennett High School. On the opening play of the game, Abdul Sesay returned the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. The other scorers for the Gators were Barry Carter and Josh Young who each netted over one hundred rushing yards. With their performances on Friday night, both Barry and Josh have rushed for over a thousand yards this season.

The defense, led by Shawn Hamilton, Uwaila Omorogbe, and Barry Carter, only allowed 3 points on the night, shutting down JM Bennett's well known running game. What an outstanding performance!

Come out this Friday night as Reservoir hosts Glenelg in the Regional Championship! Congrats again to the team and to Coach Bryan Cole and his entire staff. Good Luck this week!

Congratulations to the Speech and Debate Team!

Several team members competed this past Saturday at the Arundel High Invitational. Our students in Novice Lincoln Douglas continued their winning ways! Ryleigh Griffin and Caleb Melton were both undefeated and won gold medals. In addition, Cade Campbell won his first two rounds and Shafin Malik and Richard Do received strong praise for their arguments on the negative side of a topic concerning the refugee crisis.

Competing in Children’s Literature, Shelby Johnson did a great job and received lots of positive feedback from the judges. We want to thank Ms. Brenda Shouse, Ms. Joan Smith, and Ms. Sue Siettmann, Ms. Emily Mandile’s sister, who supervised the team as Coach Mandile was away due to a death in her family.

Thank you to our Education Support Professionals!

As part of American Education Week this year, the Howard County Public School System declared yesterday to be Educational Support Professional Day! Beyond our teachers, counselors, and administrators, there are almost 100 other staff members who support all that goes on every day at Reservoir. We want to thank our secretaries, paraeducators, nurse, assistants, registrars, clerks, bookkeeper, and cafeteria workers for all that they do. They are truly invaluable to all of our students’ success! In fact, I think every day should be ESP Appreciation Day! Thank you!

Congratulations to the RHS Band Program!

Three of our students have earned positions in the Howard County High School Gifted and Talented Band. Competing with other students throughout the county to earn a spot in this prestigious group, Josh Choi placed 5th in the Horn section, James Waters placed 4th in the Tuba Section, and Eva Sauer placed 1st in the Clarinet section. Congratulations to these students, their families, and Mr. David Bacon, Band Director!

Congratulations to the Cross Country Teams!

After qualifying for the State Championships by finishing among the top teams at the Regional Championships last week, the Cross Country teams traveled to Hereford High School this past Saturday for the championship meet.

The Girls Team finished 13th overall. Led by junior Heather Ailinger and freshman Annabel Cortez, the girls had a great showing! Strong performances were also contributed by Mikayla Kantar, Cece Wood, Ananya Mathur, Hunter Little and Rebecca Dockendorf.

The Boys Team, led by the duo of Kai Muniz and Will Christian, finished 12th overall. Juniors Jake Carson, Ruben Rosario, and Jake Carr rounded out the scoring five for the team. Travis Ponton and Al Hernandez also ran great races!

Congrats again to the teams! Thanks also to Coach Phil Rogers, Coach Jud Lincoln, and Coach Rhys Ziemer for another exciting season!

Congratulations to the RHS Visual Arts Programs!

Ashley Rothermel from Ms. Long’s Art 2 GT class and Melina Toibero from Ms. Klim’s Photo 1 GT class have had their artwork selected for display at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore as part of the Howard County Public School System exhibit: Honoring the Process. The exhibit is open through November 28th. A reception, open to the public, will be held on November 22nd from 1-3 PM.

Have you seen the art and photography displays around the school? Highlights from all of the RHS Visual Arts classes are rotated and exhibited year round in the showcases and above the lockers on the first floor. Check out the impressive work from so many of our talented students! Artwork can also be viewed on the school twitter, hcpss_rhs. Thanks to Mr. Greg English, Ms. Danielle Klim, Ms. Christine Long, and Mr. William Borja for their dedication to our students!

Thanks to our Human Geography AP teachers!

Ms. Kathy Schloss and Mr. Matt Gresick took their classes on a field trip recently to visit places of worship in the local area to learn more about the Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh, and Hindu faiths. This learning experience provided great opportunities to greater understand the curriculum that these students have been learning in class. Thank you, Ms. Schloss and Mr. Gresick, for creating this worthwhile lesson!
