Congratulations to Reservoir High School’s DECA Team! 

As reported last week, Reservoir’s DECA Team competed in the State Career Development on March 10 and 11.  While some details were available last week and were included in our Great News, more information is now available.

With 55 students participating in 43 events, Reservoir High School earned Second Place overall among all competing schools from across Maryland.  These students are now eligible to continue on to the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in April to compete against students from not only the United States but from several other countries that attend each year.

In addition, Sean Folely, Matt Helmick, Billy King, Joseph Raymond, Sachi Rai, Hayoung Park, and Olivia Lathon all received First Place certificates in the Virtual Business Events.

Finally, Meghna Sreenivas received the prestigious Emerging Leader Award from National DECA in recognition of her exemplary attributes as an academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, and experienced school chapter and state leader. In addition, Meghna was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Maryland DECA for her excellent leadership and commitment to the organization.

Congratulations to Ms. Lauren Grant and Ms. Janine Kucik! 

Ms. Grant and Ms. Kucik are among 84 educators nominated by students and families for the Howard County Gifted and Talented Educator Recognition Award this year.  The Recognition Reception, hosted by the G/T Parent Advisory, will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center.  Congratulations again to Ms. Grant and Ms. Kucik for their outstanding contributions to the Reservoir school community!

Congratulations to the Speech and Debate Team! 

This past Saturday at Catonsville High School,  Reservoir had its first repeat state champion in a Speech category ... Britney Sarpong successfully defended her title in Children's Literature.  With the African folktale "A Story! A Story!" Britney placed first in every round of competition!  Britney also earned a spot as a National Qualifier a very large field in Oral Interpretation of Poetry and Prose.  She performed two poems on the theme of America from Langston Hughes and Alan Seeger and a prose piece entitled "Out of her Mind."

Pauline Comising narrowly missed qualifying for the National Championship, taking Seventh Place in Declamation.  Sarah and Sarene Owusu earned Eighth Place in Dramatic Duo.  Shelby Johnson also competed in her first championship in Children's Literature after qualifying at the Regional Championships.

In the Debate events, Shafin Malik and Joe Smith made it to the Final Round and narrowly missed qualifying for Nationals in Public Forum.  In Lincoln Douglas, Freshman Ryleigh Griffin defeated the two time defending state champion in the first round and ended up losing a close match to this year's champion.

Thanks to Ms. Deborah Lavine, Mr. Prahalad Pateel, Ms. Brenda Shouse and RHS Alums Nsikan Akpan, Maddie Jones, Brian Shouse, Haley Sweeton and Puja Trivedi for serving as judges!  Special Thanks to Ms. Emily Mandile who does a fantastic job as our Speech and Debate for the past several years!

Congratulations to the MESA Team! 

On Wednesday, the Reservoir MESA Team competed in the annual Howard County MESA competition at JHU Applied Physics Laboratory.  Various team members participated in the following group competitions:  Cyber Robot Challenge, Basswood Bridge Challenge, and the Prosthetic Arm Challenge.  The team of Clayton Chu, Desiree Morrison, Bashira Oloso, Ares Shakleford and Zen Tabligan took Third Place overall in the prosthetic arm challenge.  The students had a great time representing Reservoir and are looking forward to next year's competition.   Congrats again to all of the team members and our MESA Sponsor, Mr. David Burke!

Congratulations to the Orchestra! 

The Orchestra performed in the annual Howard County Orchestra Adjudication last night.  The orchestra's performance of the Hungarian Dance #5 and 6 along with the Romanian Dance were excellent!  The orchestra received outstanding reviews from the adjudicators.  Congrats again to our orchestra students and Mr. Colin O'Bryan!

Congratulations to Ms. Laura Farro! 

Ms. Farro, our phenomenal Italian teacher, was chosen as one of three finalists for the 2016 HCPSS Language Teacher of the Year!  Ms. Farro has greatly expanded our Italian program while also serving the Reservoir Community as the Ninth Grade Co-Team Leader and working with the Alpha Achievers and Italian Club.  The finalists will be recognized at the Howard County World Language Day at Long Reach High School on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 10 AM.  Best Wishes to Ms. Farro on a well deserved honor!

Congratulations to Mr. James Mackin! 

Mr. Mackin was recognized as the Reservoir High Senior Class Teacher of the Year in a surprise ceremony yesterday.  Mr. Mackin teaches Chemistry and Physics along with coaching JV Girls Basketball and sponsoring our FCA Club.  The seniors appreciate Mr. Mackin's caring nature, dedication, calm demeanor, and corny jokes.  Mr. Mackin will be recognized at a luncheon with the superintendent and Board of Education in April.  Congrats again, Mr. Mackin!
